history

New River is named after a discontinuous stream of the same name that belongs to the catchment area of the Agua Fria River . The place was founded in 1868 by Darrell Duppa as a carriage station. For many years the place was the terminus of the Black Canyon Highway (today Interstate 17 runs along this route ). The paved road ended in New River and continues to Prescott only as a gravel route.

New River has largely retained its rural character, but the Phoenix is spreading further and further into the region.

When the Del Webb Corporation presented a development plan in the mid-1990s that would make the place about the size of Flagstaff , this sparked efforts to incorporate the CDP. However, these endeavors were short-lived.

With the Phoenix metropolitan area expanding northward and the city's general plan including the entire area, the future of New River is uncertain. Newly arrived residents identify more with Phoenix or the Anthem, which emerged in 1998 .
