Black Canyon was the gateway to the high plateau and the mountains. The Woolsey Trail got its name from King Woolsey, an early settler who appeared here in the mid-1860s with the first settler's wagon. At the beginning of 1872, the rest area on the Agua Fria River and the Jack Swillings Ranch established the village. The horse-drawn carriage connection between Phoenix and Prescott was discontinued in 1917. Electric power came to Black Canyon City through the 1920s , coming from the Kay Copper Mine, which closed in 1929. In the 1960s, a land reform was carried out in connection with the interstate construction.

Personalities

Black Canyon City is closely associated with the name Jack Swilling . During the Civil War he had several legal and illegal occupations. When he founded a mine in 1873, he caused a population explosion in Black Canyon City. He died in 1878 on his ranch in the local area.
