Gila County [ ˈhiːlə ˈkaʊnti ] is a county in Arizona in the United States . The county seat is in Globe .

geography

The county is located slightly southeast of the geographic center of Arizona and has an area of ​​12,421 square kilometers, of which 72 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the counties: Navajo County , Graham County , Pinal County , Maricopa County , Yavapai County, and Coconino County .

history

The county was founded on February 8, 1881 and named after the Gila River. The origin of the word is not certain. It may come from the Spanish de Gila, which means "steady flow". Another explanation sees it as a modification of a longer term from the Quechan language , which means "salty river" and refers to the salinity of the Gila River.

The Kinishba Ruins have been a National Historic Landmark since July 1964 .

Gila County had a population of 51,335 people as of the 2000 census . There were 20,140 households and 14,098 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.82% White, 0.38% African American, 12.92% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 6.59% other races Groups; 1.80% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 16.65% percent of the population.

Of the 20,140 households, 26.30% percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.10% percent were married couples living together, 10.80% percent were single mothers, 30.00% percent were non-families. 25.80% were single households and 12.30% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.10% residents under 18 years of age, 6.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.40% between 45 and 64 years of age 19.80% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 96.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,917 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,593. Males had a median income of $ 31,579 versus $ 22,315 for females.
