La Paz County is a county in the state of Arizona in the United States . The county seat is in Parker .

The county is located in western Arizona, borders California to the west and has a land area of ​​11,654 square kilometers and a water surface of 34 square kilometers. It is bordered clockwise by the counties: Mohave County , Yavapai County , Maricopa County , Yuma County , Imperial County (California), Riverside County (California), and San Bernardino County (California).

history

The county was formed on November 2, 1982 from parts of Yuma County. It is the only county in Arizona that was formed after Arizona became a state in 1912. The county was named after the former gold rush settlement and today's ghost town of La Paz.

Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of May 6, 2020, including the Hi Jolly Monument , Old La Paz and the Old Presbyterian Church .

According to the 2000 census , La Paz County had 19,715 people. There were 8,362 households and 5,619 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.15% White, 0.79% African American, 12.53% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, and 9.35% other races Groups; 2.68% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 22.42% percent of the population.

Of the 8,362 households, 21.20% percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.20% percent were married couples living together, 8.20% percent were single mothers, 32.80% percent were non-families. 26.60% are single households and 12.90% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.79 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.10% residents under 18 years of age, 6.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 20.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.60% between 45 and 64 years of age 25.80% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 105.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 105.10 males.
