Quartzsite is a city in western Arizona in the United States . It is located 33 km from the Colorado River in La Paz County and has a population of 3669 (as of 2017). The city is affected by Interstate 10 . Furthermore, the US Highway 95 begins here and the Arizona State Route 95 ends . Quartzsite was founded in 1856 by the settler Charles Tyson in the form of a fort in order to secure the water resources there.
The city is famous for its gemstone exchanges , which attract up to a million visitors during the months of January and February. Thousands of campers come from the northern states of the USA and Canada during the winter months . They spend the winter there with their partly large mobile homes .
controversy
In July 2011 a video was published on the YouTube platform . It shows how Quartzsite resident Jennifer Jones is attacked and arrested by local police at the behest of individual city council members - and against the mayor's declared will - after accusing the council of corruption and breaking the law during a city council meeting as part of the residents question time . Jones was seriously injured in the police attack and was transported to the nearest hospital .
After the video became known to the general public and the incident was also picked up by the traditional media, the city council held a secret session in camera and decided both to remove the mayor and to declare a state of emergency .
