Yuma County is a county in the US state of Arizona in the United States . The county seat is Yuma .

The county is located in the southwest of Arizona, borders California to the west and the two Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora to the south . The county has a total area of ​​14,294 square kilometers. Here and in La Paz County , Yuma Proving Ground is one of the largest military areas in the world.

history

Yuma County was formed on December 21, 1864 as one of the four original counties. The county borders lasted until 1982 when La Paz County was formed from the northern half of the county. It was named after the Yuma people , the indigenous people of this region.

Yuma County's population was 160,026 as of the 2000 census . There were 53,848 households and 41,678 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.28 percent white, 2.22 percent African American, 1.64 percent Native American, 0.93 percent Asian, 0.12 percent from the Pacific island area and 23.59 percent from other ethnic groups together; 3.22 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 50.47 percent of the population.

Of the 53,848 households, 36.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 62.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers, and 22.6 percent were non-families. 18.5 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.27.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 10.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 18.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 102.0 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 101.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,182 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,659. Males had a median income of $ 27,390 versus $ 22,276 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,802. 19.2 percent of the population and 15.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 27.9 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 8.7 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
