The Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife sanctuary on the type of a National Wildlife Refuge in the Sonoran Desert . It is located in Pima County in the south of the US state Arizona and borders Mexico over a length of 90 km . With 3480 km² it is larger than Luxembourg and the third largest game reserve in the Lower States. The name Cabeza Prieta comes from the Spanish and means dark head, derived from a mountain of the same name in the reserve.

The area is administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service , an agency under the umbrella of the US Department of the Interior .
