The Tonto National Monument is located in central Arizona in the United States . The area is located in the extreme northwest of the Sonoran Desert and thus in an extremely arid area with less than 50 cm of precipitation per year. The only source of water is the Salt River , which has water year round.
Well-preserved pueblo buildings of the Salado Indians date from the 13th to the early 15th century. The indigenous people living here farmed and supplemented their diet with hunting and the gathering of wild plants. The Salado dominated both pottery and weaving, as is shown by finds in the southwest. Numerous finds are exhibited in the visitor center. The archaeological sites of the Tonto National Monument Archeological District were added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
