Tempe is a city in the US state of Arizona ( United States ) and flows into Arizona's capital, Phoenix . Tempe has a population of over 180,000 (2016 estimate, US Census Bureau ) and, like a number of other cities, belongs to the greater Phoenix area.
The urban area has a size of 104.1 km². The Salt River flows through the city and is dammed into Tempe Town Lake in the urban area .
Tempe is home to Arizona State University , the second largest university in the United States by student numbers . The headquarters of US Airways , which ceased operations in 2015 after merging with American Airlines ( Fort Worth ), was also in the city .
In contrast to Phoenix, Tempe has an appealing city center with the Arizona State University campus , with more pedestrians than cars. There are many bars and restaurants here, which are mainly used by the university students.
Interstate 10 , US Highway 60 and Arizona State Routes 101 and 202 run through Tempe .
history
The area around Tempe was the seat of the Hohokamindians , who dug canals for irrigation and left this area in the 15th century. Fort McDowell was founded 40 km northeast of present-day Tempe. The pioneer Darrell Duppa is said to have named the settlement after the Tempe valley near Mount Olympus in Greece .
