Sally Meyerhoff

Sally Meyerhoff (born December 7, 1983 in Tempe , Arizona , † March 8, 2011 in Maricopa , Pinal County , Arizona) was an American long-distance runner .

Career

Meyerhoff attended Duke University in Durham , North Carolina from 2003 to 2006 and ran for the Blue Devils team. Her best results at NCAA championships were third place in the team standings in the cross country run in 2005 and seventh place in the 10,000 meter run in 2006.

In January 2008 Meyerhoff made her marathon debut and finished sixth in the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon in 2:42:46 hours. In April she improved in Boston in the US elimination race for the Olympic Games in Beijing to 2:39:39 hours, but only reached 20th place with this performance. In the San José Half Marathon in October, she finished fourth in 1:12:52 hours.

In May of the following year Meyerhoff won the US championships in the 25-kilometer road race and in October achieved a new personal best in fifth in the Twin Cities Marathon with 2:35:49 hours. In November 2010 she finished 27th in the New York City Marathon in 2:41:00 hours, and in January 2011 she celebrated her first marathon victory in the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon in 2:37:56 hours. Two weeks later, she finished her race in the US half marathon championships in 1:15:24 hours in 14th place. She decided to turn to triathlon later in the season .

She was killed on March 8, 2011 when she was struck by a pickup truck while training at an intersection in Maricopa, Arizona . Meyerhoff died at the accident site.
