The Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon (official name PF Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon after sponsor PF Chang's China Bistro ) is a marathon that has been taking place in Arizona since 2004 . The route connects the cities of Phoenix , Scottsdale and Tempe , which are part of Maricopa County . The program also includes a half marathon and a final concert with a renowned band.

route

The start of the marathon is on Washington Street in downtown Phoenix and runs north on 7th Avenue, then east past Biltmore Fashion Park. The Indian School Road leads to the center of Scottsdale, which you leave south on Scottsdale Road . On McClintock Drive you walk south to Tempe and cross the Salt River about four kilometers from the finish, which is located at Sun Devil Stadium .

The half marathon begins one block south of the marathon start on Jefferson Street and turns east off the marathon course after two miles. After 17 km you will reach Papago Park. Then you cross the Salt River on the Mill Avenue Bridge and reach the finish line at Sun Devil Stadium.

On both courses there are 50 vertical meters uphill and 35 downhill.

history

From the beginning, the race was the combined marathon / half marathon with the most participants worldwide. In 2006, a separate race took place on the second half of the marathon course, in which Haile Gebrselassie improved the half marathon world record by 21 seconds to 58:55 minutes.

According to 2007 calculations by the Arizona Office of Tourism , the event generated $ 44 million in revenue for the local economy. In 2008 the organizer Elite Racing was taken over by the Competitor Group .

In 2010 the race was supplemented by a 50 km ultra marathon , for which Dean Karnazes acted as the namesake. In 2011 Josh Cox , after reaching the finish line as the winner, continued the race on the track and field facility of Arizona State University and missed the world best time of Thompson Magawana with his 50 km time of 2:43:45 h (2:43: 38, split time at the Two Oceans Marathon 1988) by just seven seconds.

So far, the headliners of the final concert have been:
