Mårten Bernt Erik Boström (born August 3, 1982 in Kirkkonummi ) is a Finnish athlete and orienteer . In 2013 he became world champion over the sprint distance in orienteering.

Career

Mårten Boström was born in 1982 as the youngest of four children in Kirkkonummi, southern Finland, into an orienteering family. His brother Mikael Boström , who was twelve years older than him , was runner-up in the Finnish relay team in 1997 and 1999. He had his first contact with orienteering at the age of four.

In 2004, Boström won the bronze medal in the sprint at the European Orienteering Championships. In 2005 he was also the Finnish champion in this discipline. Between 2004 and 2007 he took part in orienteering world championships four times in a row and achieved ninth place as the best result. Then he devoted himself to the goal of qualifying for the Olympic marathon. In 2008, he would have needed a time of 2:15 hours, but he missed it with 2:18:51 hours, set up in the marathon in Ottawa , Canada . Also in 2012 he tried to qualify for the Olympic Games. At the Rotterdam Marathon on April 15, 2012, however, he again exceeded the qualifying time with 2:21:03 h. Then his focus returned to orienteering and the upcoming 2013 home world championships in Finland, where he surprisingly won the sprint distance competition.

Boström is married to the orienteer Matleena Boström (née Ojapalo ). Before moving to the Swedish club IFK Lidingö in 2013, he was a member of the Finnish clubs Lynx and Turun Metsäkivijät . Boström studied geographic information science at Northern Arizona University (B.Sc.) and University of Helsinki (M.Sc.).
