Siuntio [ ˈsiuntiɔ ] ( Swedish. Sjundeå [ ˈʃʉndɛəoː ]) is a municipality in southern Finland . It is located in the Uusimaa countryside 50 km west of the capital Helsinki . Siuntio is bordered by Kirkkonummi to the east, Ingå to the west and Lohja and Vihti to the north . In the south, Siuntio has a short stretch of coast on the Gulf of Finland .

The largest settlement centers of Siuntio are the town center and the area around the train station. 37% of the inhabitants of Siuntio are Finland-Swedes . The community is officially bilingual with Finnish as the majority and Swedish as the minority language. Siuntio has a population growth of 1.5 to 2% and benefits from its proximity to the capital Helsinki. As a result of the influx from other parts of the world, the number of inhabitants rose from 3,259 to 5,522 between 1970 and 2006. At the same time, the proportion of Swedish-speaking residents, who were the majority until the end of the 1970s, decreased. While in 1970 more than a quarter of the population worked in agriculture and forestry, in 2004 it was only 4%. Today more than 70% of the population work in the service sector, many commute to Helsinki.

Siuntio got its name after the river Siuntionjoki (Swedish Sjundeå å). Literally sjunde å means “seventh river”. According to one theory, the river got this name because it is the seventh river east of the Aurajoki . The Siuntiojoki flows in the north and east of the municipality through natural areas. The south and west, on the other hand, are more agricultural. There are some smaller archipelagos off the coast of Siuntio .

The Church of Siuntio

The first written mention of Siuntio comes from the year 1382. The stone church of the place was built in the second half of the 15th century. The patron saint of the church is Saint Peter . Suitia and Sjundby manors were built in 1540 and around 1560. They later belonged to several noble families. The writer Aleksis Kivi stayed in Siuntio from 1864 to 1871 and wrote his novel The Seven Brothers here . After the Second World War , Finland had to lease the Porkkala peninsula to the Soviet Union for 50 years in 1944 . A quarter of the municipal area of Siuntio also belonged to the area. The Soviet Union gave Porkkala back to Finland as early as 1956.
