The Aurajoki [ ˈɑu̯rɑjɔki ] ( Swedish. Aura å ) is a river in southwest Finland . The river has its source in the Oripää area and flows through Pöytyä , Aura , Lieto and Kaarina to Turku .
At around 70 kilometers in length, it is actually not one of the most important rivers in Southwest Finland , and the amount of water it carries does not justify this position. But he received a prominent position from the city of Turku at its mouth .
The name Aura means plow in Finnish ( joki is the Finnish word for river). This is an indication that agriculture in Finland originated in the area around the river . Numerous prehistoric finds were made on the banks of the river, dating back to the Iron Age (around 550 BC). Older, Stone Age finds could not be dated.
The sources of the river are located in the loamy hill country around the village of Oripää . Due to the low retention possibilities and the high degree of agricultural use in its catchment area, the amount of water carried by the river, as well as that of its tributaries, fluctuates strongly from year to year. During the cold months of winter and dry summers, the river on the Hallistenkoski , the second largest and last rapids before the mouth, has no water. (The largest rapids is the Nautelankoski in the area of the municipality of Lieto .) When the snow melts and after heavy rainfall, the amount of water can rise to up to 300 m³ per second, with 7 m³ per second being the annual average. The river flows into the Archipelago Sea at the port of Turku .
The water is brownish in color due to the flooding of loamy ground and is also heavily polluted with nutrients. In order to prevent excessive amounts of nutrients from entering the sea, which sometimes cause algae plagues , dams are to be built in the coming years so that the nutrients are deposited. Despite the recent Although in the years improved, but low quality of the water is about 95% of the drinking and industrial water needs for the city of Turku covered from the river.
Geographically , the river is young and growing due to the uplift of the Finnish mainland masses. The melting away of an approximately 3,000 m thick layer of ice since the last ice age around 10,000 years ago has resulted in less weight on the land, so that it rises several centimeters from the sea every year.
