Aura [ ˈɑu̯rɑ ] is a municipality in south-western Finland. Aura lies in the interior of the triangle spanned by the Finnish cities Helsinki , Tampere and Turku , the latter of which is only 30 km to the southwest. It is around 125 kilometers to Tampere and 160 km to Helsinki. The name of the municipality is derived from the Aurajoki river flowing through its area , the word aura meaning plow in Finnish .
history
Aura parish was officially established shortly after Finnish independence in 1917. The area was separated from the municipalities of Pöytyä and Lieto and merged. Prunkkala , one of the two founding parts, was in 1639 as a partial congregation founded and at the same time regardless of the development of aura as a church community. For a long time agriculture was the rural community's only livelihood until a sawmill was built at the Kuukoski waterfall on the Aurajoki River in the 1720s . In 1764 the second oldest Finnish paper mill was established in the Järvenoja part of the municipality, but it ceased operations in 1820. At the end of the 19th century, the sawmill also ceased operations. In the 1930s, the Aura-based leather factory was a national company. In the two decades from 1975 to 1995, the community's population had grown by 44%.
Attractions
nature
The area of the municipality of Aura is shaped by the river Aurajoki flowing through it. Stone Age excavations were made on its banks and it still serves as a major tourist attraction today. In particular, canoe trips are offered as a leisure activity. There are also numerous hiking trails through the Aurajoki cultural landscape.
Museums
There are three museums in the municipality of Aura. The Veräjänkorvan Museo was founded in 1971 and, as a private museum, exhibits around 3000 furnishings from various decades. In the summer café Prunkkalan Poikettava , a wooden house built in 1816, paintings, handicrafts and other art objects have been exhibited since 1992. The Koskipirtti ja Museotalo exhibits historical objects in a former dairy that tell of the way of life and work in the past.
