Kimitoön ( Swedish ) or Kemiönsaari [ kemiønˌsɑːri (] Finnish is) a community in the southwest Finland landscape Finland Proper . It was created at the beginning of 2009 through the merger of the municipalities of Kimito (Kemiö), Dragsfjärd and Västanfjärd .

The municipality of Kimitoön is located in the eastern part of the archipelago off the southwest coast of Finland and includes most of the island of Kimitoön and the offshore archipelago of Hitis (Hiittinen). Kimitoön is with an area of ​​524 km² after Fasta Åland , the main island of Åland , the second largest island in the Finnish Baltic Sea and is only separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. The area of ​​the municipality is 698.11 km² (of which 11.00 km² inland water). Including the marine areas that extend to the border of Finnish territorial waters, the municipality has a total area of ​​2,801.25 km². The neighboring communities of Kimitoön are Pargas in the west, Sauvo in the north and Salo in the east. The largest towns in Kimitoön are the parish village of Kimito and Dalsbruk (Taalintehdas), the main town of the former Dragsfjärd municipality.

The municipality of Kimitoön has around 7,300 inhabitants, 71.4% of whom are Finland-Swedes . Kimitoön is officially bilingual with Swedish as the majority and Finnish as the minority language.

In the parish village of Kimito is the open-air museum Saga Lund museum and the church of Kimito, a medieval stone church from the 15th century. Dragsfjärd Church is a wooden cruciform church from 1752–55. The old church of Västanfjärd was also built from wood in 1759–60, the new church was built from stone in 1910–12 in the style of national romanticism. On the island of Hitis there is a wooden church built between 1685–86. The place Dalsbruk arose around an ironworks founded in 1686 . A special feature of the place is that most of the houses are built from cinder block , a by-product of smelting. The oldest surviving buildings date from the 18th century. The tallest lighthouse in Scandinavia is on the island of Bengtskär .
