Kimitoön ( Swedish ; Finnish. Kemiönsaari or Kemiö for short ) is an island off the southwest coast of Finland .

Kimitoön is located in the eastern part of the archipelago around 40 kilometers southeast of Turku and belongs to the Varsinais-Suomi landscape . Most of the island belongs to the municipality of Kimitoön , which was created in 2009 through the merger of the municipalities of Kimito , Dragsfjärd and Västanfjärd . The area around fishingiemi on the northeast tip of Kimitoön belongs administratively to the city of Salo . With an area of 524 km², Kimitoön is the second largest island in the Finnish Baltic Sea after Fasta Åland , the main island in the autonomous province of Åland .

Kimitoön is only separated from the mainland in the north and east by narrow gullies. The Strömma Canal east of Kimitoön is the only place in Finland where the tides are ebb and flow . The island is connected to the mainland by two bridges. Most of the island’s inhabitants are Finland-Swedes , only the fishing area is traditionally Finnish-speaking.
