The Archipelago ( Finnish Saaristomeri , Swedish Skärgårdshavet ) is part of the Baltic Sea off the southwest coast of Finland . The archipelago is located between the Finnish mainland and the archipelago of Åland , in the south there is the Gulf of Finland , to the north by the Gulf of Bothnia limited. The sea area is interspersed with thousands of skerries and cliffs. The archipelago in the archipelago is commonly referred to by the city of Turku (Swed. Åbo ) as "Turku archipelago" (Finnish Turun Saaristo , Swed. Åbo skärgård ). A total of around 33,000 people live on the islands of the archipelago.

geography

The number of islands in the archipelago is difficult to estimate because most of them are just small rocks. Estimates range between 20,000 and 50,000 islands. The archipelago can be roughly divided into the inner and outer archipelago, with the outer archipelago consisting of smaller, mostly uninhabited islands. The postglacial land uplift reduces the water depth in the area of the archipelago by around 0.5 cm per year. Shoals become islands, islands grow together. Large areas that are now part of the mainland used to be part of the archipelago.

population

Around 33,000 people live in the archipelago all year round. In the southern part of the archipelago, the Åboland region , there are mostly Finnish-Swedes , the northern part is Finnish-speaking.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the archipelago of the archipelago

The traditional livelihood in the archipelago is fishing. Agriculture can only be carried out to a limited extent in the small and rocky archipelago, even if the mild climate favors arable farming. Tourism is becoming an increasingly important economic factor for the archipelago.

The islands of the archipelago are connected by the archipelago ring road via ferries and bridges. Shorter ferry routes are served by the free yellow ferries of the Finnish Roads Administration, while on longer routes the chargeable white ferries of the Maritime Administration operate. In cold winters, official ice roads are set up between some islands on the frozen sea .
