Ferry between Pargas and Nagu on the archipelago ring road

The archipelago ring road ( Finnish: Saariston rengastie , Swedish: Skärgårdens ringväg ) is a project launched by the Finnish Maritime Administration in 1996 with the aim of promoting tourism in the Turku archipelago and improving transport links between and to the archipelago. The ring road consists on the one hand of a state road and on the other of ferry connections between the individual islands.

A round trip on the ring road consists of 160 to 200 km of road and around 30–50 km of ferries and bridges. The ring road can be used in both directions and it is even possible to continue to Åland .

In 1996 a good 5,000 tourists came, but in the summer of 2003 there were already a good 20,000.

Many tourists travel by bicycle, which is particularly useful because almost all ferries can be used free of charge by bicycles and people. However, there are only a few bike paths and there is considerable car traffic on the weekends of the main season (midsummer to 1st week of August).
