Merimasku [ ˈmɛrimɑsku ] is a former municipality in the archipelago off the coast of southwestern Finland. It is located on the island of Otava and was incorporated into the city of Naantali in 2009 .

The municipality of Merimasku had an area of 52.16 km² excluding the marine areas. It comprised the northern part of Otava and 93 smaller archipelagos , six of which were inhabited all year round. The church village of Merimasku with the wooden church built in 1726 is located on the northern tip of Otava and is only separated from the mainland by the narrow Kirkonsalmi Sound. Two bridges connect Merimasku with the mainland: Since 1970 the island has been reached from the east of Naantali via Luonnonmaa , and in 2002 the bridge was completed over the Kirkonsalmi to Askainen .

Merimasku was originally a chapel parish of the Masku parish on the mainland . It is to this that Merimasku owes its name ("Meer-Masku"). In 1577 the Naantali chapel community was subordinated. The political municipality Merimasku was established in 1865 when the administration of the rural parishes was separated from the church administration. Until the 1970s, the population of Merimasku was declining, reaching a low of 648 in 1975. Since then, the community has experienced a strong upswing, most recently it had 1,659 inhabitants. The Merimasku community was purely Finnish-speaking .

At the beginning of 2009, Merimasku was incorporated into the mainland town of Naantali, along with Rymättylä , the second municipality on Otava, and Velkua .
