Culture and sights
The Paimio sanatorium was designed by the famous architect Alvar Aalto and completed in 1933. It functioned as a tuberculosis hospital until the 1960s ; today it is a pulmonary clinic. The functionalist building is considered to be one of the most important works of Aalto's early creative period. His design envisaged that the building itself should contribute to the healing of the patients. Sanatorium Paimio is a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage .
Another well-known structure is the Mikaelin Kirkko (St. Michaels Church), which was built in the late 1680s. It consists of the church, built of gray quarry stone with a hipped roof, and a church tower that is offset from it, which is square at the bottom and merges into a regular octagon in the roof.
Infrastructure
There has been a hydroelectric power station on the Askalankoski rapids since the 1930s . Paimio is still an important electricity producer.
