Ljungby is a town in the Swedish province of Kronobergs län and the historic province of Småland . It is the capital of the Ljungby municipality . The place is located at the intersection of the major highways Europaväg 4 and Riksväg 25 .

history

The area around Ljungby is rich in finds from the Stone Age, Bronze and Iron Ages. Grave fields, rune stones and finds of stone axes prove that people have settled here for 5000 years.

Ljungby's strategic location played a major role in its development. This is where the “Lagastigen” path and the path that led along the shores and beaches of Lake Bolmen met . In the 13th century, when travelers needed accommodation, a royal letter asked innkeepers to offer it on major routes. An inn was built in the small village along this route, and since then the place where “ Gamla Torg ” is today has been a meeting place and trading place for travelers as well as for the residents of Ljungby.

When Ljungby received the rights as a minority town (Köping) in 1828 , it was in strong competition with Berga . The area around Ljungby was surrounded by sand with little vegetation and so Ljungby got help from the Crown in reforesting forests to bind the sand. In 1878, the railway line between Vislanda and Bolmen was opened, which later became the Karlshamn-Vislanda-Bolmen (KVBJ) and Halmstad-Bolmen (HBJ) routes.

Ljungby got city rights in 1936 . In 1953 a fire destroyed large parts of Ljungby's city center. The buildings erected in the modern style during the reconstruction are still hotly debated today.

In addition, the company Svetruck AB is located in Ljungby, which manufactures industrial trucks (forklifts) with unusual dimensions (e.g. for container ports).

In addition to the above, there are many smaller companies, some of which specialize in niche products.

"Ljungby Porten" is the name of an industrial park at the southern E4 entrance towards Ljungby. The resident companies are u. a .: Max (hamburger restaurant chain), CityGross (supermarket), JYSK , Intersport , McDonald’s , Sibylla (fast food chain), Statoil , Skokanonen (shoe store), Biltema (Swedish hardware store chain) and a motel . This industrial park is gradually being expanded.

The centrally located railway and station area, which lay fallow for many years, was connected to the inner city in 2014 and large parts of it were newly built over. The tracks were dismantled and a new bus station was built. To make room for the renovation work, the historic wooden building "Godsmagasinet" was moved several hundred meters to the west and later integrated into the area elsewhere. The station building with restaurant does not enjoy grandfathering and will be demolished if necessary. This central area was no longer suitable for the planned high-speed railway line Europe Corridor . This project deals with a rail connection between Stockholm and Hamburg. In Sweden, the route is based on the route of European route 4 and thus also leads directly past Ljungby.
