Olof Svebilius , also Olov Svebilius or Olaus Svebilius , more rarely also Olof Swebilius and Olof Schwebilius (born January 1, 1624 in the parish of Ljungby; † June 29, 1700 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and archbishop of Uppsala .

Life

Svebilius studied from 1638 at the University of Uppsala and spent 1640–1641 a year abroad at the University of Königsberg . In 1649 he acquired the title of filosofie magister in Uppsala . He then accompanied the future country marshal and chancellor Johan Göransson Gyllenstierna (1635–1680) on a study trip to Germany, Italy, Holland, England and France from 1651 to 1656 . After his return he became rector of the cathedral school in Kalmar and in 1658, after his ordination , castle preacher and lecturer for theology there. In 1663 he returned to Ljungby as a pastor.

In 1668 he was called to Stockholm as court preacher and with the religious instruction of the underage King Charles XI. entrusted. Promoted to senior preacher in 1671, he was also pastor at the Storkyrkan in Stockholm. After becoming a Dr. theol. had received his doctorate, the protection of the king brought him in 1678 the call to bishop in the Diocese of Linköping . After the death of Johannes Baazius , he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala in 1681 and served as the highest dignitary of the Church of Sweden until his death . A member of the Reichstag since 1668 , as archbishop from 1682 to 1697 he was the spokesman for the pastorate.

As the king's confidante, Svebilius worked on all major church projects at the end of the 17th century. He was involved in the revision of the church constitution ( kyrkolag ), which was completed in 1686, and in the editing of a new agenda and a new hymn book . He was of greatest importance as the author of the new declaration on Martin Luther's Small Catechism . His work Enfaldig förklaring öfver dr Martin Luther's lilla cateches, stäld genom frågor och svar from 1689 was considered a masterful introduction to the evangelical faith. It was also translated into Finnish and Sami, and even into French, and was binding throughout Sweden until it was replaced by the catechism of Jacob Axelsson Lindblom in 1810 .

Svebilius was married to Elisabeth Gyllenadler (1639–1680), a daughter of Bishop Samuel Enander (1607–1670) and granddaughter of Bishop Jonas Petri Gothus (1587–1644) , since 1658 . They had seven children who were accepted into the hereditary nobility in 1684 under the name Adlerberg . Two daughters were in turn married to the bishops Carl Carlsson and Jonas Petri Linnerius (1653-1734).
