Erik Benzelius the Elder . sometimes Eric Benzelius the Elder (born December 16, 1632 in Bensbyn, Luleå municipality , † February 17, 1709 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and archbishop of Uppsala .

Life

He was then employed by Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie and made a study trip to Germany, France, England, Holland and Belgium with his son Gustaf Adolf (1647–1695) from 1663 to 1665. The encounter with other currents, however, strengthened his anchoring in Lutheran Orthodoxy , which was already shown in the Disputation De vitando Syncretismo (1664 at the University of Giessen ).

After returning to Uppsala, Benzelius became Associate Professor of History and Moral Philosophy, and the following year Associate Professor of Theology. At the same time he was ordained . In 1668 he moved up to a full professorship and served as rector of the university in 1674 and 1680 . In 1675 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. In his courses and publications he made a name for himself primarily as a church historian. From 1675 he was also a member of the pastor's office in the Swedish State Council and soon gained great influence on church politics.

However, he continued teaching and took on other duties outside of his diocese. He had already participated in the revision of the church constitution ( kyrkolag ), which was completed in 1686 , and was now involved in the editing of a new catechism, a new Bible translation and a new hymn book . Here he campaigned against innovations that he considered dangerous for the unity of the church. He also wrote a textbook on homiletics in 1694 , which was in use until the end of the 18th century.

After the death of Olaus Svebilius , he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala and served as the highest dignitary of the Church of Sweden until his death . Here he fought u. a. Pietism invading Sweden . He was also responsible for rebuilding the city after the great fire of 1702.
