The Svea hovrätt in Stockholm is the largest of the six hovrats in Sweden . The court is an appeal court and roughly corresponds to a German higher regional court . 15 local courts ( tingsrätter ) are subordinate to it and it treats around 10,000 new members every year. It was founded in 1614 as the first Swedish court of its kind and until the establishment of the Högsta domstolen in 1789 was the highest court under the king and the imperial council .

The judicial district includes the provinces of Stockholm County , Uppsala County , Södermanland County , Gotland County , Västmanland County and Dalarnas County . The court is also the highest environmental court in the country. Five environmental courts are subordinate to him.

The Svea hovrätt has been based in the Wrangelschen Palais on Riddarholmen in Stockholm since 1756 . However, the nine court departments are also spread across the Palais Hessenstein , Palais Schering Rosenhane , Östra Gymnasiehuset and parts of the Old Reichstag .

Fredrik Wersäll has been the court president since 2008 .
