Högsta domstolen

The Högsta domstolen (German Supreme Court ) is Sweden 's highest court in civil and criminal matters. In administrative matters, there is also a supreme administrative court Högsta förvaltningsdomstolen (until 2010 Regeringsrätten).

The court was founded in 1789 by Gustav III. and is based in the Bondesches Palais in Stockholm . The at least 14 members should be experienced judges. They are known as justitieråd and are selected by the government. The government appoints the court president ( ordförande ) from among its number .

The court is the final instance in civil and criminal matters . The decisions of the court have prejudice effect . It decides on appeals against decisions of the Hovrätt . The Justice Ombudsman of the Reichstag and the Justice Chancellor can also appeal in criminal matters .

Marianne Lundius has been the court president since 2010 .
