Vehmaa [ ˈvɛhmɑː ] ( Swedish : Vemo ) is a municipality in south-western Finland with 2285 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the Vakka-Suomi region in the northwest of the Varsinais-Suomi landscape, around 20 kilometers southeast of Uusikaupunki and 40 kilometers northwest of Turku . The community is monolingual in Finnish .
Vehmaa is located on the Baltic coast on the Vehmaansalmi Sound, which extends 14 kilometers into the mainland. In the past, the area belonged to the archipelago offshore , but the land uplift made it part of the mainland. The former islands are now rocky hills, the fertile areas in between are used for agriculture. Red granite has been mined in Vehmaa since the 18th century .
The medieval stone church of Vehmaa was built between 1425 and 1440 and is dedicated to Saint Margaret . The free-standing stack of bells was created in 1826.
