Uusikaupunki [ ˈuːsiˌkɑu̯puŋki ] ( Swedish : Nystad [ ˈnyːstɑːd ], both German literally "Neustadt"; place name before the city was founded: Kalainen , German literally "Fischreich" in the sense of "rich in fish") is a small town in western Finland . It is located around 70 km northwest of Turku on the Gulf of Bothnia .
history
Uusikaupunki was founded in 1617 by the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf . In 1721 the Peace of Nystad was concluded here, which ended the 21-year Great Northern War and subsequently established Russia's rise to a great European power and Sweden's decline as a hegemonic power.
economy
With Valmet Automotive (a Metso Ventures company ) Uusikaupunki is home to the only Finnish and at the same time northernmost car factory in the world. Two models of the Porsche brand ( Boxster and Cayman ) were assembled there until 2011, and they were shipped from what was once the second largest port in Finland . According to Valmet, a total of around 228,000 Porsches were produced in Finland from 1997 to 2011. Valmet Automotive also produces the convertible top for the convertible version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class . Valmet expanded this area at the end of 2010 by taking over the roof division of the insolvent Osnabrück-based car manufacturer Karmann , with the remaining production facilities in Osnabrück and Żary in Poland . Between 2013 and 2016, a total of more than 100,000 Mercedes-Benz A-Class vehicles were built. From 2017, additional units of the mid-size SUV GLC will be produced at Valmet's Uusikaupunki plant.
The Uusikaupunki plant has a one-shift capacity of 30,000 cars a year. The plant employs around 800 people.
A special feature is the water supply. After the dry summer of 1955 made drinking water scarce, a number of islands north of the city were connected by dams. This created a 40 km² large basin, separated from the Baltic Sea, which today contains around 0.16 km³ of fresh water and from which 7,400 m³ of water is withdrawn every day.
