Robert Wilhelm Ekman (born August 13, 1808 in Uusikaupunki , Finland , † April 19, 1873 in Helsinki ) was an important Finnish painter and teacher of the national romantic style.

life and work

Ekman was born in the Swedish-speaking part of the coast of Finland, in Nystad (Uusikaupunki), as the son of the doctor Karl Kristoffer Ekman and his wife Sara Elisabet (née Gadolin). He began his studies in Finland with Gustaf Wilhelm Finnberg (1784-1833) and continued it at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan (Royal Swedish Academy of Arts) in Stockholm . In 1836 he completed his studies, became a Swedish citizen and made study trips to the Netherlands, France and Italy from 1837 to 1844. After his return to Stockholm in 1844 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy .

In 1845 Ekmann returned to Finland and became a teacher at the drawing school ( Turun Piirustuskoulu ) founded by Carl Gustaf Söderstrand in Turku in 1830 . Ekman was considered to be a innovator of Finnish painting, whereby he was particularly committed to history and portrait painting and the motifs of the national epic Kalevala . In Turku, he painted the frescoes in the cathedral , which he completed in 1855. From 1850 he reformed art teaching at the drawing school in Helsinki, which was founded in 1848. In 1855 he became a Finnish citizen again. In Turku, a monument made of red granite by Wäinö Aaltonen (1894–1966) and inaugurated in 1927 honors the important teacher and artist.
