history

The place is traditionally called a city, but the name was abolished nationwide after the municipal reform of 1971. Östhammar was first mentioned in 1368 when Albrecht von Mecklenburg issued the town with privileges. However, Östhammar was already a well-frequented trading center in earlier times. The privileges were lost in 1491 to the neighboring village of Öregrund , but Östhammar was given them back in 1539. In 1651 the city received a town hall and in 1663 the residents received permission from the government to build a church.
