Österbybruk is a village ( Tatort ) in the Swedish municipality of Östhammar in the province of Uppsala län . The place has 2331 inhabitants (as of the end of 2015).

history

The manor Österbybruk belonged to the Wasa dynasty in the 15th century and was a secondary residence to Örbyhus Castle . Under Gustav I. Wasa , iron works were built here with German help to supply the army. The Dutch merchant Louis De Geer , who had already invested in iron production in other Swedish locations, bought the facilities in Österbybruk together with the Lövstabruk and Gimo plants in the 17th century and expanded them further. The forge built during this period is almost completely preserved in its original condition. In 1927 the systems were taken over by the steel group Fagersta Bruks AB (headquarters: Fagersta ). In 1983 iron production in Österbybruk was completely shut down. There is only one iron foundry left (Österby Gjuteri AB), which uses the traditional stamp to mark iron products from Österbybruk.

Culture

Every year in June, the country's music groups specializing in the nyckelharpa (a string instrument typical of Sweden) meet in the area of the manor . The fire festival ( Eldfesten ) follows annually in August in the area of the outdoor pool with music by torchlight, fireworks , light shows and other attractions.

traffic

Two larger country roads (290 and 292) connect Österbybruk with the main towns in the area. A narrow-gauge railway line from Dannemora mine to Hargshamn harbor on the Baltic Sea runs through the village. The transport of people, and thus the stop at Österbybruk station, was discontinued around 1960. In the 1970s, the line was converted to standard gauge, which was then used to a limited extent. In 2008 the line was modernized. Since 2012, ore has been mined again in Dannemora and shipped via Hargshamm.
