Örbyhus is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Uppsala län and in the historical province of Uppland .

location

Örbyhus belongs to the municipality of Tierp . The place is about 40 km as the crow flies north of the provincial capital Uppsala and 15 km southeast of the community center Tierp . Örbyhus is the second largest place in the municipality after its central place Tierp.

The place is on the railway line Stockholm – Sundsvall , which is today counted to the East Coast Railway (Ostkustbana) . The Provincial Transport Company Upplands Lokaltrafik operates suburban transport between Uppsala and Gävle under the Upptåget brand . In Örbyhus a branch line branches off for goods traffic to Hargshamn (port) and Hallstavik (paper mill) on the Baltic Sea coast . Örbyhus is bypassed south of the provincial road 292, which branches off south of Östhammar on the Baltic Sea coast from Reichsstraße 76 and goes to Söderfors via Tierp, where European route 4 is crossed .

A few kilometers northeast of the village extends the Florarna moorland , which is a protected nature reserve as Florarnas nature reserve .

History and sights

Örbyhus goes back to the Libbarbo farm in the southern part of today's village, which has been known since the 13th century. The area was later divided between the communities of the Vendels kyrka , consecrated in 1310 , about ten kilometers south-east, and the Tegelsmora kyrka from the late 15th century, four kilometers to the north.

The name- giving castle Örbyhus , located three kilometers south of the village on the west bank of Lake Vendelsjön, was built on the site of an estate that was built in the early 14th century. This was acquired by the later royal family Wasa in the middle of the 15th century and expanded into a representative castle. The castle was later rebuilt several times. Paintings by Anthonis van Dyck and Thomas Gainsborough can be seen in the castle today .

Örbyhus consolidated itself as an independent village after the opening of Uppsala-Gävle Järnväg , a private railway line connecting these two cities in 1874 (nationalized in 1933). This route was taken on the initiative of the influential politician and then castle owner Baltzar von Platen . As a result, a sawmill , a factory for agricultural technology and a factory for skis, kick sledges , ice boxes and garden furniture were built until the beginning of the 20th century . A bed factory was added in 1911 and a clothing factory in 1935.

The modern church of Örbyhus was consecrated in 1967.
