Count Baltzar Julius Ernst von Platen (born April 16, 1804 on Gut Frugarden, Skaraborgs län , Sweden ; † March 20, 1875 in Stockholm ) was a liberal Swedish politician . From 1871 to 1872 he was Swedish Foreign Minister .

Life

family

Baltzar von Platen was the son of the statesman and builder of the Göta Canal , Baltzar Bogislaus von Platen (1766–1829) and his wife Hedvig Elisabeth Ekmann. He married on August 1, 1832 at Gut Leufsta near Uppsala (Sweden) Sofia Eleonora Charlotta Freiin de Geer (born August 6, 1813 in Stockholm; † June 8, 1888). By inheritance and marriage, he was one of the richest men in Sweden.

Political career

Platen completed a nautical training and was promoted to lieutenant at sea . From 1840 he was a member of the Swedish State Council . In 1844 he became cabinet chamberlain, in 1849 Minister of the Sea and commander of the navy . From 1871 to 1872 he was Swedish Foreign Minister.

He has received multiple awards, such as the Royal Order of Seraphines and the Wasa Order , he was an honorary doctor of the University of Oxford and was in charge of several academies.
