Skaraborgs län was a Swedish province ( Län ) from 1634 to 1998 , located in the historic province of Västergötland , between the lakes Vänern and Vättern . The capital letter was "R". The center of the former province is the then royal seat of Mariestad and the city of Skara . Other important cities are Lidköping , Falköping and Skövde in the center of the region and Hjo and Karlsborg am Vättern.

Today the area largely belongs to the administrative province of Västra Götalands län , with the exception of the south-eastern part, which belongs to the administrative province of Jönköpings län . The area between the two lakes was the center of Västergötland in the Middle Ages, and many cultural monuments still bear witness to this today.

On the one hand, Skaraborg is a pronounced agricultural area - the proportion of employees in agriculture is around three times as high as in the Reichs average - but also a strong industrial area - the proportion of employees in the industrial sector also clearly exceeds the Reichs average. In contrast, the service sector, especially in the private sector, is only weakly developed. The service center is Skövde with a provincial hospital (with around 2,500 employees), a university (with just over 7,000 students) and other facilities.
