Skara is a town in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Västergötland .
It is located on the European route 20 , about 150 km northeast of Gothenburg . Skara is the center of the former province of Skaraborgs Lan and the capital of the municipality of the same name .
history
Skara's rise began around 1050 when the first Swedish bishopric moved to the city ( Diocese of Skara ). In the Middle Ages, the city became the ecclesiastical and cultural center of Västergötland. After the Reformation in 1527 and the confiscation of all church property by the king, the city lost its economic and cultural importance, but remained an important school town for the region. Its cathedral school, founded in the Middle Ages, was converted into a grammar school in 1641, and a veterinary institute was founded in 1774 (today a college). The further development of the city is characterized by its role as a bishopric and school town, the connection to the economic development in the 19th century was neglected because the route of the main railway line Stockholm- Gothenburg through the city was rejected.
Cityscape
The city center still has its irregular medieval layout . The old market square, the Gothic cathedral , the second oldest in Sweden, and the town hall form the center. Other buildings of cultural and historical interest are the library and the old grammar school from the second half of the 19th century (cultural monuments). There are also a number of wooden houses from the 19th century. North of the old town is the Provincial Museum ( Västergötlands Museum ), which includes an open-air museum with buildings from the region. One of Skara's twin cities is Zeven (Lower Saxony, Germany).
Education and economy
There is a branch of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet, SLU) in Skara . Companies in the music and entertainment industry are also based in Skara, making the city one of the most important centers of this industry outside of the big cities.
Skara is the starting point of the Skara – Lundsbrunn museum railway , which is operated by steam trains and rail buses in the summer season (late June to early September).
