history

Västergötlands Museum was founded in 1919 by the Västergötland Antiquities Association to house their collections. In addition to the museum, there was also an open-air museum. In 1977 the museum was given to a foundation formed by the Antiquities Association, the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Skaraborgs Lan and the Municipality of Skara . The museum was renamed the Skaraborgs Länsmuseum . In 1994 the museum was expanded to make room for further exhibitions. After the province of Skaraborg became part of the newly formed province of Västra Götalands län in 1998 , the museum returned to its original name.

Exhibitions

The museum has three basic exhibitions:

  • an exhibition on the approximately 3000 year old bronze shields from Fröslunda , which includes not only the shields but also other objects from this period and a picture game;
  • an exhibition on the city of Skara in the Middle Ages (from around 1000 to 1350);
  • an exhibition on the artist Agnes de Frumerie , who was born in Skövde in 1869 .

In addition, there are regularly temporary special exhibitions.

Archive and projects

The museum's extensive archive was opened to the public in 1995, which earned the museum the “Museum of the Year” award. In addition to purely museum activities, the museum takes part in archaeological investigations and excavations in the region, offers advice and prepares expert reports on issues relating to the preservation of monuments and supports the region in projects on cultural tourism.
