Stefan Jarl (born March 18, 1941 in Skara ) is a Swedish documentary filmmaker and film director .

life and work

As a 12-year-old, Jarl borrowed the 8 mm film camera from his father, who was interested in photography and made cine films. When he saw "a documentary about the extermination of the Jews and the concentration camps in Germany", Jarl got enthusiastic about the documentary genre and working with the film camera and decided to make films from now on.

But it wasn't just the film that interested him in his early youth, but also the nature of his Swedish homeland, which made Stefan Jarl aware of Arne Sucksdorff's films . When Sucksdorff began shooting the film Pojken i Trädet (The Boy in the Tree) near Skara in 1959 , Jarl had a unique opportunity to get to know the Swedish documentary filmmaker. Until 1960 he worked for him as an assistant.

From 1961 to 1964 he studied art at Uppsala University . After graduating, he attended the Stockholm Film Academy in 1965/66 . After making his first full-length documentary in 1968, he worked from 1969 to 1976 as production manager for Stig Björkman , Öyvind Fahlström , Mai Zetterling and Bo Widerberg and again as an assistant to Arne Sucksdorff.

Jarl, who is best known for socially critical films, founded the cultural association Folkets Bio together with Ulf Berggren in 1973 , which imports films from all over the world and markets them in Sweden.

His best-known film is the trilogy Dom kallar oss mods (They call us Mods ) with the first part of the same name, Ett anständigt liv (A decent life) as the second part and Det sociala arvet (The social heritage) as the closing element. The latter won the 1993 European Film Prize in the “Best Documentary” category.

In 2010 he had his blood and that of a colleague tested for toxins for the documentary "In Defense of the Unborn" and then researched their origin. Among the more than 200 toxins found in the analysis, they found highly toxic flame retardants used in theaters and pesticides that his body had never broken down for 30 years and that had been unsaleable for 30 years. In the film, he interviews the two chemists who are solely responsible for the health approval for thousands of traded goods.
