The Canton Axat was 2015 a French canton in the department of Aude and the region Languedoc-Roussillon . It comprised 14 parishes in the Arrondissement of Limoux ; its main town (French: chef-lieu ) was Axat . The nationwide changes in the composition of the cantons resulted in its dissolution in March 2015.
The canton was located in the south-eastern foothills of the Pyrenees , on the upper reaches of the Aude river . It was 273.24 km² and last had 1614 inhabitants (as of 2012), which corresponded to a population density of 6 inhabitants per km². The heights varied from 387 m (Cailla) to 2447 m (Le Bousquet) with an average height of 761 m .
