The Aude is a river in southern France , in the Occitanie region . It has its source in the Pyrenees , in the municipality of Les Angles . Its source is in the Pyrénées Catalanes Regional Natural Park . The Aude initially drains generally northwards, turns east at Carcassonne, later south-east and flows into the Mediterranean after 224 kilometers in the municipality of Fleury .

The upper course of the river is natural and one of the most beautiful rivers in the south of France, the Aude is partially dammed for energy generation. The lower reaches to the east of Carcassonne are less scenic because the river water is used for agricultural irrigation.

shipping

In general, no shipping is possible on the Aude . However, downstream from Carcassonne, the river accompanies the Canal du Midi and is partly used to supply the waterway to the canal.

In the area of Sallèles-d'Aude , the river is crossed by the Canal de la Robine , which has a connection to the Canal du Midi to the north through the Canal de Jonction . Here, navigation on the Aude is permitted for a few hundred meters.
