RTLinux

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

RTLinux is an extension of Linux to a real-time operating system, which was originally developed by Victor Yodaiken together with his student Michael Barabanov at the University of New Mexico . RTLinux is available in a free version and until 2011 in a commercial version.

RTLinux was originally marketed by FSMLabs until 2007, when the rights were taken over by the embedded Linux specialist Wind River Systems , which has been a 100% subsidiary of Intel since 2009 .

RTLinux / GPL, the free version, is available under the terms of the GNU GPL . RTLinux has a certain importance in the area of controlling machines. For example, the machine tool laboratory WZL at RWTH Aachen University uses this free operating system variant. In contrast, it is largely unknown in the mass market for ordinary users.

Alternative approaches to real-time Linux

  • RTAI ( Real Time Application Interface , an open source development comparable to RTLinux)
  • LibeRTOS ( Linux Based Enhanced Realtime Operating System )
  • Xenomai (Real-Time Framework for Linux)
  • There is a patch for the Linux kernel that enables hard real-time capability. Gradual integration into the kernel is planned from version 5.4
