history

The name Coursan appears for the first time in 1048 in the Latin and Occitan records of the local seigneurie who paid tribute to the Viscount of Narbonne . The Rue des infidèles (street of the infidels) in the north-west of the city is believed to date from the time of Islamic expansion, when a strip of territory around Narbonne was held by the Umayyads up to 759 .

Frequent flooding forced the dykes on the Aude to be constantly raised and stabilized. Today the areas of Coursan near the shore are below the Aude level. In addition, numerous weirs and relief channels were built, such as the large floodwater north of Coursan.

On April 14, 1907 there were protests in Coursan against the effects of the drop in wine prices. You were part of the winemaking rebellion in Languedoc .

After the bell tower, the church choir is undoubtedly the oldest building in Coursan. Emerging from a smaller church, the Gothic choir vault that is still preserved today dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. The sacristy behind the choir was built in the middle of the 18th century, the nave and side chapels at the end of the 19th century. The church is classified as a monument historique .
