Cuxac-d'Aude is a French commune with 4030 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region ( Languedoc-Roussillon until 2015 ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Narbonne and the municipality of Le Grand Narbonne .

geography

The municipality of Cuxac-d'Aude is located seven kilometers north of the city center of Narbonne and about 17 kilometers from the Mediterranean coast.

The almost table-level municipal area extends from the Aude in the south to the border with the Hérault department in the north. The plain is interrupted by two island-like hills ( Roque Vacquière and Mont Carrétou ). Except for a small strip in the far north and the southern bank of the river Aude, the community area is forestless.

The town center on the left bank of the Aude is characterized by narrow streets, and the buildings are lighter in a semicircle around the core. To the north of the core town, the district of Pont des Graves extends over a length of 2500 meters in a west-east direction. There are also some hamlets and individual farms, of which the Aubian and Rabbes wineries in the north are named.

Cuxac-d'Aude borders in the north on Montels , in the north-east on Poilhes (point of contact) and Nissan-lez-Enserune (point of contact), in the east on Coursan , in the south on Narbonne , in the south-west on Moussan , in the west on Sallèles-d ' Aude and in the northwest at Ouveillan .

history

In Gallo-Roman times, a settlement called Geminian existed in the area of today's municipality of Cuxac until the 10th century. In the Middle Ages, Cuxac was surrounded by ramparts and only accessible through three city gates, of which St. Martin's Gate still stands today. The Romanesque apse of the Gothic Church of St. Martin probably dates from the 10th century.

Frequent flooding forced the dykes on the Aude to be constantly raised and stabilized. Today, the areas near the banks of Cuxac are below the Aude level. In addition, numerous weirs and relief channels were built.

Economy and Infrastructure

While cereal growing and sheep breeding used to dominate in Cuxac, the main line of business today is viticulture. The wine cultivated around Cuxac-d'Aude does not belong to any protected wine-growing region. The Géminian cooperative winery, founded in 1935, nevertheless produces high-quality single-variety wines, including Chardonnay , Viognier and Merlot . 33 farms (cultivation of grain, oilseeds, fruit and vegetables, goat and sheep breeding) and 142 winegrowers are located in the community.

The trunk road from Béziers to Narbonne , which runs parallel to the A9 autoroute, runs through Cuxac . In the eastern neighboring municipality of Coursan, there is a connection to the railway line from Bordeaux via Narbonne to Sète .
