In the 19th century the number of inhabitants rose from around 600 to over 1200 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture have led to a continuous population decline since then, which reached its lowest point in the 1970s. The proximity to the city of Narbonne has again led to a significant increase in the number of residents in recent decades.

economy

A large part of the agricultural land has been reserved for viticulture for centuries ; White, red and rosé wines are produced, which are marketed through the appellations Vin de Pays de l'Aude , Coteaux de Narbonne , Le Pays Cathare and Pays d'Oc . Some vacant houses have been converted into holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

The place arose in the 9th or 10th century on a slight hill near a castle.

  • The Château de Védilhan is a building from the end of the 19th century built in historicizing styles and is privately owned.
