economy

Viticulture is the main source of income for the place; the vineyards of the municipality of Termes are within the protected designation of origin Corbières . Since the 1970s and 1980s, a little tourism ( gîtes ) has been added as a branch of industry. Sheep breeding is hardly practiced any more.

history

Termes is mentioned as early as the middle of the 12th century; It is unclear whether it was already a fortified village ( castrum ) at the time or whether it was only redesigned in the Cathar era. In 1210 Termes was besieged during the Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229) as one of the Occitan cities that offered protection to the Cathars . The Château de Termes fell in December 1210 to the Crusaders under Simon de Montfort .

In 1228 a royal garrison was quartered in the largely destroyed castle, which on the one hand was supposed to prevent the Cathar movement from flaring up again, but on the other hand also held a strategically important position in the fight against the expansion efforts of the Crown of Aragon . The village of Termes was still owned by Olivier de Termes , who gave it to Louis IX in 1260 . sold, who immediately relocated the village further down, but at the same time brought the castle back to life through new construction work.

Castle ruins

The castle Termes was first mentioned in the mid-12th century in records. During the Albigensian Crusade , crusaders besieged and conquered the complex. Others

Église Notre-Dame
  • The Église Notre-Dame is a Romanesque church from the 12th century, but it was fundamentally redesigned in the 19th century (relocation of the entrance from the south to the west side, construction of a bell house instead of the older bell gable , installation of a round window above the altar ). The interior of the church has a single nave and no apse , but with a slightly raised choir area ; the room is covered by a pointed barrel vault with belt arches . Two items of equipment are worth mentioning: the baptismal font with its supporting column from the 13th century and a baroque panel depicting a Mother of God with a child. Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1951 .
  • The Chapelle Saint-André is located southeast of today's village in the valley of the Sou de Laroque. It dates from the Middle Ages, but was thoroughly restored at the end of the 19th century.
  • The privately owned water mill La Buade is located about 2.5 kilometers from Termes in the valley of the Sou de Laroque.
  • The Gorges du Termenet and the Gorges de Coynepont are two gorges of the Corbières, some of which are also accessible to hikers.
