In the 19th century the number of inhabitants rose from just over 100 to over 500 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture have since led to a continuous decline in population that peaked in the 1960s to 1980s. The proximity to the city of Narbonne has again led to a significant increase in the number of residents in recent decades.

economy

A large part of the agricultural land has been reserved for viticulture for centuries ; White, red and rosé wines are produced, which are marketed through the appellations Pays de l'Aude , Corbières , Corbières-Boutenac , Languedoc , Le Pays Cathare and Pays d'Oc . Some vacant houses have been converted into holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

The Moun Séré fortress was built on the top of the Roquelongue rock in the 11th century and was to last until 1550. In 1153, Raingarde de Montseret founded the first Cistercian monastery in France near the hamlet of Ollieux , which, however , was subordinated to the Abbey of Fontfroide as a priory twenty years later (1174) . The stones of the castle were removed for the construction of a railway line in the 19th century.

Attractions

  • The approximately 200 meter high rock of Roquelongue dominates the place; from its summit there are views of the Corbières and the Montagne Noire .
  • The parish church of Saint-Félix is a 17th century building; the bell tower and two side chapels were added in the 19th century.
