Homps is a French commune with 591 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the municipal association Région Lézignanaise, Corbières et Minervois .

geography

Homps is located about 32 kilometers northeast of Carcassonne and 27 kilometers northwest of Narbonne , between Olonzac in the Hérault department in the north and Tourouzelle in the south on the Canal du Midi in the Minervois . The Aude and the Ognon flow through the municipality.

Attractions

In 1788 a bridge over the Aude was completed.

The old Romanesque chapel of Saint-Etienne in the Homps cemetery was first mentioned in the 12th century. The portal dates from the 13th or 14th century. The church consists of a nave with two yokes and a semicircular apse . It was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques ( inscrit MH ) in 1951 . It is also classified as a Site Inscrit (natural monument) together with the cemetery . The chapel is no longer used for religious purposes, but is occasionally used for events.

The parish church of Saint-Michel was built in the 19th century.

The remains of a castle that belonged to the Order of St. John were heavily modified in the 19th century through renovations. The Saint-Michel tower of the Maltese is now a Site Inscrit .

economy

An important line of business for the Hompais is viticulture , wines from the AOC Minervois , Languedoc and Languedoc blanc are produced and there is a wine cooperative on site. In addition, trade, transport, various services and the construction industry are also important.

In the 19th century, the port of Homps became the third largest port on the Canal du Midi, designed and built by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century . The port of Homps is important for the shipping of wines from the Minervois and Corbières .
