Saint-Martin-des-Puits ( Catalan : Sant Martin dels Poses ) is a French commune with 28 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department ( Occitania region ). It is one of the smallest municipalities in France . The inhabitants call themselves Podomartinais .

The village and church of Saint-Martin-des-Puits are about 200 meters above sea level. d. M. on a loop of the Orbieu river in the mountainous and rocky landscape of the Corbières , on Départementstrasse 212, a good 11 kilometers (driving distance) southwest of the former abbey Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse .

economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of Saint-Martin-des-Puits lived - largely on the principle of self-sufficiency - from the yields of their stony fields. A small amount of wine was also grown. Today the tourists in the holiday homes ( gîtes ) play an important role in the local income.
history
Hardly any information is available on the history of the place, but a monastery is mentioned as early as the 9th century. Towards the end of the 11th century, the lands of the place belonged to a family named Durfour; However, Bertrand de Durfour had to cede his property to the Lagrasse Abbey. The foundation of a priory, which was dependent on the Lagrasse Abbey and continued until the French Revolution , is documented for the year 1093.
