geography

The Aude near Salles just before it flows into the sea

The municipality of Salles-d'Aude is about ten kilometers north-east of Narbonne and ten kilometers from the Mediterranean coast.

The municipality stretches on both sides of the Aude river and borders the Hérault department in the north . In the south, the municipality has a small share of the heights of the Massif de la Clape (also called Montagne de la Clape ).

In the extensive plains to the left and right of the diked Aude, wine is cultivated, the sites of which belong to the small La Clape wine-growing region , located immediately northeast of the Corbières wine-growing region.

The settlement of the core town is separated by the Autobahn 9 (Rhone Valley-Spanish border) from Fleury, which is directly adjacent to the southeast . The hamlets of Celeyran and Le Pech belong to the municipality .

Salles-d'Aude borders in the north on Nissan-lez-Enserune , in the northeast on Lespignan (point of contact), in the east on Fleury , in the south on Vinassan and in the west on Coursan .

history

The place was first mentioned in 966 as Salae . About Castrum de Salis (1322) and Salas or Sallas and Salhas in the 15th and 16th centuries, the spelling of the place name changed to Salles (since 1781).

Population development

The location near the sea and the short distance to the city of Narbonne favored a steady increase in population. The population has more than doubled since the 1970s due to the move to new housing estates around the old village center.
