Nissan-lez-Enserune ( Occitan : Nissa d'Ausseruna ) is a French commune with 3995 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitania region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Béziers and the canton of Béziers-1 . The inhabitants are called Nissanais .
geography
Nissan-lez-Enserune is about nine kilometers southwest of Béziers on the border with the Aude department . Nissan-lez-Enserune is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Colombiers in the north, Lespignan in the east, Sales-d'Aude in the south, Coursan in the south-west, Capestang in the west, Poilhes in the west and north-west and Montady in the north-west. The Canal du Midi forms a section of the northern municipal boundary.
The village belongs to the Coteaux-d'Ensérune wine-growing region .
history
The Oppidum d'Ensérune shows the importance of the community as an early settlement when it was still in the middle of a lagoon landscape facing the Mediterranean. An early Celtic, perhaps also Hellenistic settlement can be proven. The current town was first mentioned in the 11th century, when Messrs Imbert and Bertrand de Nissan got a piece of land here. The Templars have estates here in the small village of Périès . Until the end of the 18th century, the plague pathogen raged several times in Nissan. The municipality of Nissan has had the suffix -lez-Enserune since 1950 .
