Faugères is a municipality in the south of France , about 70 kilometers from Montpellier . It is located in the arrondissement of Béziers in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region . The municipality of Faugères has 515 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on an area of ​​2401 hectares and is 250 meters above sea level.

location

The place is the namesake of one of the most famous wine-growing regions in southern France. It is 19 kilometers south of Bédarieux on the road and railway line to Béziers . It is particularly popular with the British as a holiday destination . The municipality is part of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park .

history

Faugères was already settled in Roman times. The remains of six Roman villas have been preserved. In Visigothic times there was a chapel here. Under canon law Faugères belonged to the nearby diocese of Lodève . In the 8th century the area suffered from Saracen invasions. It was first mentioned in 934 as "villa", and in 1084 a castle was built here, after which the famous vineyard "Châteaux de Faugères" is named. In the 12th century, the place received a city fortification, remains of which have been preserved. The Huguenots built their own house of prayer in 1577, which they used until they were expelled in 1685. In 1858 the place received a railway connection.

Attractions

The most important building in the village is the Château de Faugères, whose two towers date from the 13th century. Remains of coats of arms can be seen on the south facade of the four-wing building, but the lettering can no longer be deciphered. The Maison Planque is also worth seeing, as are three well-preserved windmills, the most famous of which dates from the 18th century.

Faugères has a small local museum dedicated to beekeeping and the flowers of the area. Above the town there is a lookout point with a panoramic view over the village. Not far from Faugères are two caves, the Grotte de Buscabre and the Grotte de Fournier .

Festivals

Annual fairs are held in the town on January 20th, the Monday after July 25th and September 10th.
